In this year Simon Bussy painted this picture of the biographer Lytton Strachey working on a thesis with the aim of gaining a fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Simon had married Lytton’s sister Dorothy the previous year and Lytton was visiting them at their home in France at the time of the portrait.
This year saw Picasso settled in Montmartre and he moved from his Blue to his Rose period as seen by this painting of Suzanne Bloch in the Spring followed by ‘The Actor’ done towards the end of the same year.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German expressionist painter and one of the founders of the artists group Die Brücke or “The Bridge”, a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. But that was to come; today he was doing this.
Sir Philip Hendy, in his preface to the 1961 Bevan retrospective exhibition, commented that Bevan was perhaps the first Englishman to use pure colour in the 20th Century.

MacNair 1904
James Herbert MacNair was a Scottish artist whose work contributed to the development of the “Glasgow Style” during the 1890s. MacNair was friends with Charles Rennie Mackintosh. As part of their training, the two attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art between 1888 and 1894, and it was there that they met the MacDonald sisters, Margaret and Frances. MacNair would go on to marry Frances, and Mackintosh would marry Margaret. He painted this picture – The Gift of Doves – in this year
